In this latest episode of Your Garage, Alex and Nathan return to Birmingham to visit Auto Works HQ, a business that’s making waves both in the workshop and online. Run by Andy Wells and his wife Stacey, the garage has become a model for efficient space use, smart operations, and modern marketing—all packed into a modest 3,000 square feet.
Built from the Ground Up
The journey began in 2019 when Andy Wells took on an empty unit and transformed it into a fully operational garage within just six weeks—completing the groundworks himself with the help of a builder. Since then, the team has grown steadily and now includes MOT testers, technicians, a tyre specialist, valet technician, and even a full-time social media manager.
Andy Wells credits much of their growth to careful staff selection, trusting his team, and staying involved as both a manager and hands-on MOT tester.

Personal Journey with Purpose
Andy’s story is one of resilience. After suffering a major stroke at age 31, he continued building the business while recovering. He and Stacey balanced running the garage with being foster carers, showing that determination and community spirit have always been at the heart of Auto Works HQ.
Now working six days a week, Andy still leads from the front—quite literally—with tools in hand and a focus on customer satisfaction.

Maximising Every Square Foot
Despite the small footprint, the site includes five ramps, an alignment bay, a mezzanine for storage, and a dedicated parts process that keeps operations smooth and efficient. The business operates on a tightly managed booking system, ensuring customers aren’t waiting weeks and technicians have the right balance of work.
From a clean and efficient layout to a parts system that tracks components down to the key and bay number, every inch of space is used with precision.

Social Media That’s Making a Real Impact
Auto Works HQ stands out for its strong presence on platforms like TikTok, where videos regularly rack up hundreds of thousands of views. Andy Wells’s team, including the charismatic duo “Ant and Dec” of the workshop (Lewis and Lewis), create a mix of educational and entertaining content that’s helped shape the garage’s brand and reputation.
The addition of a full-time social media manager has allowed the team to focus on daily content, driving reach and engagement far beyond their local area.

Giving Back to the Trade
Andy Wells recently returned to Wolverhampton College—where he was once a student—to give talks to the next generation of technicians. He now sends his own apprentice there, citing the college’s modern approach and investment in proper facilities.
It’s a full-circle moment that reflects the ethos of Auto Works HQ: build, give back, and lead by example.

Looking Ahead
With a clear sense of identity, a strong team, and an ever-growing online following, Auto Works HQ is well-positioned for continued success. Their blend of efficiency, transparency, and community engagement offers a blueprint for how modern independent garages can thrive.
